Socialism Versus Capitalism
The Advantages of Capitalism

Socialism versus capitalism and the advantages of capitalism was well-illustrated by an economics professor at a college. Someone shared this with me. At the end it asked "Can you think of a reason for not sharing this?" I couldn't, so here it is, with just a couple of very minor changes.

Where is some politics taking this world?

"Some ideas are so stupid only intellectuals believe them." - George Orwell

Socialism versus capitalism. When the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. Is this man truly a genius? Checked out and this is true...it DID happen!

Socialism versus capitalism
Socialism versus capitalism illustrated in a college economics class.

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that.

Remember, there IS a test coming up. The 2012 elections.

These are possibly the five best sentences you'll ever read and all are applicable to this experiment on: socialism versus capitalism.

  1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
  2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
  3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
  4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
  5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

So why do I include a page about socialism versus capitalism on a site about the Bible? Doesn't the Bible teach about sharing the wealth around. Yes, of course it does. And it says that "it is more blessed to give than to receive." (Acts 20:35). There are many people, who through hard work, make plenty of money, even more than they need and they are very blessed in being able to voluntarily share with those that have less.

You might think of this verse:

"And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common." (Acts 4:43)

What we need to remember about the context of this is that it is speaking of new Christians who had just accepted the Messiah. They were of Jewish background and were suffering persecution:

"And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: ..." (Acts 4:32)

Probably many lost their jobs, were cut off from family and friends and had no support except what they could get from those who believed likewise. It was an emergency situation and in the days to come we will return to that and again people will be sharing in order to survive. There will also be the motivation of the love of Christ to do it.

God's ideal now is not people living in communes but the family unit. We are to work hard and enjoy the fruits of our labor (capitalism by definition):

"And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God." (Eccl 3:13)

Some other applicable verses:

"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat." (2 Thess 3:10)
"Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread." (2 Thess 3:12)
I think as our society seems to be taking on more and more of the characteristics of socialism versus capitalism it is showing the disadvantages of socialism and the advantages of capitalism very clearly. And, most people would agree, it is not doing well.
