To Wear Out the Saints for Three and Half ... what?

The beast will wear out the saints of the Most High or, at least, try to. But it seems that divine protection has historically been and will, in the future, be provided to enable the saints to endure this persecution.

There are seven mentions between the books of Daniel and Revelation of time periods that seem to be equal and all are related to a time of persecution. These are the various ways in which the time periods are referred to:

  1. a time and times and the dividing of time (used 3 times)
  2. forty and two months (used 2 times)
  3. a thousand two hundred and threescore days (used 2 times)

They are equal (at least when the assumption is made that each month is 30 days long) as shown here:

  1. 360 days (a time) + 720 days (times) + 180 days (the dividing of time) = 1260
  2. 42 months x 30 days/month = 1260 days

Here are the verses (color coded for the time periods and the references to persecution):

"And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. (Dan 7:25)
"And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished." (Dan 12:7)
"But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months." (Rev 11:2)
"And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth." (Rev 11:3)
"And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days." (Rev 12:6)
"... he persecuted the woman ... And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, times, and a half a time, from the face of the serpent." (Rev 12:13-14)
"And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months." (Rev 13:5) "... to make war with the saints, and to overcome them ..." (v7)

Each of these passages has persecution of the saints in common.

Revelation 12:14 is discussed in the page on the blood of the Lamb where it is suggested that, in that case, the word translated as "time" could have a different meaning. Another page discusses the fact that 42 months do not equal 1260 days since our months are not consistently 30 days long and offers some ideas about the possibility of resetting the clock.
